Juan García Ripollés
The Sculptor of Dreams and Iron
Born in Alzira, Valencia, in 1932, Juan García Ripollés—affectionately known as Ripollés—is one of Spain’s most celebrated contemporary artists. His journey from humble beginnings to international acclaim is a testament to his unwavering passion and unique vision.
A Life Forged in Art
Ripollés's early life was marked by hardship; orphaned at birth, he was raised in Castellón. He worked various jobs, including as a scrap dealer and house painter, before pursuing his artistic ambitions. In 1954, he moved to Paris, immersing himself in the vibrant art scene. By 1958, his works were exhibited at the prestigious Galerie Drouant-David, sharing space with masters like Picasso and Chagall.
Returning to Spain in the 1960s, Ripollés settled in Mas de Flors, Castellón, where he continues to draw inspiration from nature, creating art that resonates with vitality and color.
An Artistic Style Rooted in Imagination
Ripollés's art is characterized by a fusion of figurative and abstract elements, often featuring anthropomorphic and fantastical figures. His sculptures, paintings, and engravings exude a sense of spontaneity and joy, reflecting his deep connection to nature and his Valencian heritage. Utilizing materials such as iron, bronze, Murano glass, and fiberglass, his works are both dynamic and whimsical.
