Maike Remane

Maike Remane (*1964) is a German artist whose connection to painting began early—at the age of ten, she won First Prize in the LBS Hannover Painting Competition in 1974. This early recognition marked the start of a lifelong journey with art.

Since 2004, she has been actively exhibiting her work in solo and group exhibitions across Germany and Spain. In 2012, she began formal studies at the University of Art in Braunschweig (HBK), and since 2017, she has dedicated herself fully to her artistic career from her own studio. Her development has been further enriched by residencies and study trips to Italy (Vittorio Veneto), Brazil, and Lisbon, where she collaborated with artists like Georg Kleber, Günther Reil, and Andrei Krioukow.

Her work has been shown in international artist symposiums in Poland and Germany, as well as in institutions such as the Casa del Cable Museum in Xàbia, Spain. Her paintings are part of both public and private collections in Germany, Spain, and Dubai.

Her Artistic Style and Approach

Maike Remane's work moves fluidly between abstraction and symbolic figuration. Her paintings evolve in visible layers, with each step of the process contributing to the final composition. Form, color, and emotion merge into unified, expressive works where the act of painting is as important as the result.

Her style is defined by a strong gestural quality and emotional depth. The use of ink and paint—sometimes transparent, sometimes thick and textured—creates movement and atmosphere, inviting the viewer to engage on a personal level.

As the artist herself describes:

“A first impulse. A color. A gesture, sometimes also a word. Written across the canvas. A dialogue that makes the inner world visible. That gives it color, gives it space. The dialogue continues, layer by layer. Sometimes flowing transparently, sometimes rough and pasty. Always in contact, conscious of what it is. Just now. Impressions of a rich outer world, lived across the globe, gathered inside. They concentrate and now flow onto the canvas. When the internal has found clarity, the dialogue with the canvas becomes quieter. A new dialogue can begin. With you, the viewer. I’m glad.”
