Christian Develter

Born in 1968 in Blankenberge, Belgium, Christian Develter is a rising star in the international art scene, known for his dynamic use of color and intricate detail. Initially studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, Develter later trained at the Antwerp Fashion Academy, where his passion for painting soon overshadowed his interest in fashion design.

His work is celebrated for its joyful compositions, which present a radiant kaleidoscope of shapes and forms, combining rough passion with playful humor and bright colors. This unique approach recalls popular fashions and trends, offering a modern twist on traditional techniques.

Develter's art is characterized by his radical choice of strong colors and a mixture of oils and acrylics, often combined with bold shapes. His pieces are deeply powerful and compelling, capturing light and space in a way that translates his desire to create large, impactful paintings. His artistic journey has taken him across the globe, particularly to Asia, where he has found new inspiration and themes that resonate deeply with his evolving style.

The Chin Lithography Series

One of Develter’s most iconic bodies of work is the Chin Lithography Series, inspired by his extensive travels in the northwestern area of Myanmar in 2012. During these travels, he visited the remote tribes of the Chin region and drew inspiration from the intricately tattooed faces of the Chin women. These tattoos, a centuries-old tradition, are used to distinguish one hill tribe from another and to indicate marital status and social rank.

The tattoos, carved into the skin using thorns and a mixture of natural dyes, ash, and animal products, reflect the rich cultural heritage and animist beliefs of the Chin people. Examples include spider webs on the face, the sun on the forehead, reptile skin patterns, tiger whiskers, peacock plumage, and leopard dots. These designs, once meant to deter Burmese kings from taking Chin women as wives, have evolved into symbols of strength and beauty.
